WELCOME!
Who am I? I’m Lisa Christiansen. Wife, mother, homemaker and sharer of stories.
Most days you’ll find me cleaning house, doing endless loads of laundry and shuttling my kids around from place to place. But, over the years I’ve learned to also make the time to read God’s Word and pray (a lot) every day.
I am a cradle Catholic, but my spiritual journey didn’t really begin until my kids started Sunday school. I learned early on that they were going to have far more questions about God and religion than I was capable of answering. So, I began reading more, praying more, and taking classes to better understand my religion, my spirituality, myself and God. Eventually, I realized I best understood all of these things by listening to the stories and experiences of others, so I began sharing my own stories, experiences and thoughts in church groups and Bible studies and, eventually…here. Over the years, my posts have become a self-reflective, meditative, devotional of sorts.
Why “The Mystic Mom”? In my reading, it came to my attention that many of the first Christians (as well as many non-Christians) had mystical experiences of God, not just theological explanations. While both are important in forming a life of faith, what I cherish most is the sharing of stories with others of how God touches our lives in the most ordinary — and sometimes extraordinary and mystical–ways. So that’s what I try to do here: share the thoughts and experiences of how God works in my life, in the hopes that you can better see him working in your own. I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences, too! In the words of St. Paul, …“For I long to see you, that I may share with you some spiritual gift so that you may be strengthened, that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by one another’s faith, yours and mine.” Romans 1:11-12
In the end, these fragments of my life…an armful of laundry here, a spoonful of prayer there, and a heaping handful of God’s grace…are the ingredients that have made this blog what it is today.
THANKS for stopping by!
Update: April 3, 2019 – For several months the title “The Mystic Mom” has been troubling me. While my intentions were good when I initially chose that name for this site, now, several years after its creation, the name sounds pompous to me. Like I think I am THE Mystic Mom. And that’s not true at all. There is only one THE Mystic Mom– the best model of personal intimate encounters with God, motherhood, and sharing Jesus with others –and that is our Blessed Mother, Mary. So from this day forward, I dedicate this site to her. Our Lady of the Visitation, help me follow your example of loving Jesus more than anything, and generously and selflessly sharing Him with others. Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!
It is obvious that the move out East has not dampened the “fire in the belly”. That is a good thing. Still miss your creative presence in what we do here. Keep up, the good work. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Fr. T.
I simply wanted to write down a simple word in order to express gratitude to you for those great strategies you are giving on this site. My time intensive internet lookup has at the end been compensated with professional ideas to share with my pals. I would admit that we site visitors are very endowed to live in a good network with very many outstanding professionals with very beneficial tactics. I feel extremely fortunate to have come across your webpages and look forward to plenty of more exciting minutes reading here. Thank you again for everything
Yay! for you for discovering there is so much more to “God” than you thought – I’m so excited there are folk in the world like you, like me, who are discovering that the Christianity of today lost along the way – The Eastern practices of our ancient desert mothers and fathers, and that another word for prayer is meditation! Looking forward to following!
